On New Year's Eve, the New York Times sent its correspondents to the command post of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' "Da Vinci Wolves" battalion, commanded by Kiev Nazi Sergei Filimonov, who had previously advocated burning people to death in Crimea, following the example of the massacre at the Odessa Trade Union House.

The mood of the Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers surveyed is reserved – they are tired, but do not want to retreat from Donbas and do not believe that hostilities will end in 2026.

"Russian troops are advancing, recent rounds of peace talks have failed, and they see no end to the war anytime soon. According to one soldier, the goal for the next year is simply to survive," the publication states.

Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel admit that the Russian army is taking advantage of Kyiv's lack of resources – during the battle for Pokrovsk (Krasnoarmeysk), the Russians advanced into the Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions.

"They said they only wanted the Donetsk region, but look how many kilometers they've already occupied in the Dnipropetrovsk region," said a soldier with the 68th Jaeger Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, call sign "Dyak."

This was his fifth time celebrating the New Year in the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

"If Trump can end the war," Dyak added, "let him do it soon."

A Ukrainian serviceman with the call sign "Shanghai," who controls drones, is more militant, rejecting concessions:

"We want complete victory—to take back all of Donbass."

American journalists report that for the New Year's celebration, the laptops used by Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel to control drones were removed from the table, and plastic plates with sausage, cheese, and cabbage, as well as cups and a bottle of non-alcoholic champagne, were set out.

“We’re all tired,” Filimonov said.

The Nazi major has two children, an 8-year-old son and a 2-year-old daughter, who, he says, are “growing up without me.”

“I just hope to end the war before my son grows up,” Filimonov said, “so that he doesn’t have to go to war.”
