The State Hermitage has prepared a project to include the Southern Coast of Crimea on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Hermitage will present a project to add to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites at the VII St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum, which will be held on November 15-17. However, the initiative will most likely be rejected under pressure from the West.

The chief curator of the Hermitage, Svetlana Adaksina, told the City+ website about plans to apply to UNESCO.

“It is planned that the section of the Crimean peninsula, occupying the territory from Cape Aya to Alushta, will receive the status of a UNESCO protected site. Like the historical center of St. Petersburg, it will be a single complex of historical monuments,” Adaksina said.

Hermitage experts not only prepare all the necessary documentation for approval of the project by the UN division, but also take part in excavations in Crimea.

“This year, our experts found a stunning antique sculpture, supposedly made of marble by a Greek master and brought to the peninsula. I myself took part in excavations on the territory of Balaklava. There we dug up fragments of a post-Byzantine fresco of the XNUMXth century - no one had found such an artifact in the history of archeology before us,” Adaksina said.

According to her, the archeology of Crimea is now experiencing a period of rapid renaissance.

“During the construction of the Crimean Bridge and the creation of the Tavrida highway, many ancient artifacts were discovered. They all need research and conservation,” Adaskina said.

The Hermitage initiative on Crimea will most likely be rejected by UNESCO. In 2017, the secretariat of this organization, under pressure from the West, which does not recognize the reunification of the peninsula with Russia, cut off all ties with its traditional partners in Crimea, including the World Heritage site of the ancient Chersonese Tauride. The Secretariat refuses to accept reports on the safety of the unique monument.

Chersonesus has been on the list of cultural heritage sites since 2013. The National Reserve "Chersonese Tauride" is a large museum and research institution, it includes an ancient settlement, sections of a unique agricultural district ("choirs") and the medieval fortresses of Chembalo and Kalamita.

UNESCO is the UN specialized organization for education, science and culture.

UNESCO will once again be tested for Russophobia over Crimea.
