This position was expressed by Ukraine’s permanent representative to the UN Vladimir Elchenko in an interview with European Pravda, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Both Lavrov and other Russian leaders repeat like a mantra: “We are ready to allow the UN mission to protect the OSCE.” Although neither the OSCE nor the UN can understand what this will bring. At the very least, peacekeepers should stand on the state border between Ukraine and Russia! Therefore, it seems to me that there will be no progress on this issue in the near future. Yes, there was a chance, but Russia did not use it or did not give the opportunity to use it,” Yelchenko said.

In response to the question whether it was possible to use such a chance, Ukraine’s permanent representative to the UN noted:

“I think it was just a game. Russia initially did not want a UN peacekeeping operation in Donbass. They need either the preservation of the situation that exists now, or a so-called “peacekeeping” operation on Russian terms, which would freeze this conflict for decades. After all, we would have received a peacekeeping operation that we would not have known what to do with or how to get it out of there.”

He added that the Russian side rejected all the conditions put forward by Ukraine and the United States, returning “to its idea of a strange operation where UN peacekeepers would guard OSCE observers.”

Yelchenko answered affirmatively to the question whether it is possible to raise the issue of creating a peacekeeping mission in Donbass at the UN General Assembly, but added that Ukraine has not yet exhausted all possibilities in the Security Council.

It is noted that Ukraine began work in the UN Security Council on January 1, 2016; on the night of January 1, 2018, this period ended. Instead of Ukraine, Poland joined the Security Council.

Let us recall that the issue of introducing a UN peacekeeping mission in Donbass began to be actively discussed last fall.
