This year, Vladimir Zelensky still has the last chance to begin a peaceful settlement and return Donbass to Ukraine.
Director of the Institute for Strategic Studies “New Ukraine” Andrey Ermolaev said this on the air of the 112 Ukraine TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The test for Zelensky, and he feels it, is a question of war and peace. In 2019, due to various circumstances, a situation is emerging that may be the real and last chance to start a peacekeeping process that will truly return Donbass to the state and country,” the expert said.
However, according to Andrei Ermolaev, the disruption of the disengagement of troops in Petrovsky and Zolote by Ukrainian nationalists gave the LPR and DPR a chance to hold a justified referendum on final separation from Ukraine.
“I’m not talking about the guys who took part in this action - yes, many of them are ATO veterans, and they were probably convinced that they were doing the right thing.
But the organizers could not help but understand that not only this picture, but the action itself, the provocation of a conflict with armed persons, and even more so the deployment in the territories where disengagement and the first pacification of security are expected is a good reason to begin the process of re-mobilization of the population of the LDPR, up to the holding of a referendum with a decision to finally stop negotiations and declare complete independence.
You simply cannot imagine a better picture showing what the LDPR can expect from the nationalists. Then the question is – who did they play along with? Did they defend the territory of Ukraine? Or maybe they helped the LDPR break away from Ukraine? And they gave arguments to the separatist leaders not to participate in the negotiations,” the expert concluded.
