Ukraine – testing ground for NATO – political scientist
Russian political scientist Denis Denisov believes that, given the current relations between Russia and NATO, one can hardly count on any consensus regarding the de facto “creeping” drawing of Ukraine into the Alliance’s orbit of influence.

Denisov stated this in a comment to PolitNavigator.
“Indeed, it’s not just that a few years ago, Crimean politicians and the public spoke out extremely sharply and negatively against joint exercises between Ukraine and NATO. In fact, these exercises became the first sign of what we can observe today,” Denisov said.
“This (opening of a NATO center near Odessa - Ed) is an absolutely logical continuation of the official policy of the Ukrainian authorities to integrate the country into the Alliance. Such trends will only increase. In this regard, Ukraine is a kind of testing ground within which NATO will try, without officially including the state in its structure, without accepting Ukraine, nevertheless, to actively defend its interests, create strongholds, its bases on the territory of Ukraine, since this is in their interests,” says the political scientist.
In his opinion, the position of the Russian Federation is important in this regard.
“We are well aware that this is a completely unacceptable approach. But the situation in relations between Russia and NATO is developing in such a way that most likely it will not be possible to find consensus on this issue,” Denisov concluded.
