According to him, after Crimea became part of Russia, only 20% of the shelf remained under the control of Ukraine, which will be explored - now scientists are waiting for the required amounts of funding.

“Almost 80% of the Black Sea shelf territory went to Russia, de facto. De jure, the government is still fighting for all this. We still have a small area of work left, about seven thousand kilometers,” Asharin said.

His information about the loss of most of the shelf was confirmed by the acting head of the State Service of Geology and Subsoil of Ukraine Nikolai Boyarkin: “According to the International Center for Advanced Research, Ukraine has lost gas fields that are located on the shelf of the Black Sea in the area of the Crimean Peninsula. These are resources in the southwestern part of the Black Sea shelf, about 500 billion cubic meters of natural gas and 50 million tons of oil and condensate, this is the Kerchen zone - 320 billion cubic meters of gas and 126 million tons of oil and condensate. They also lost the most on the continental slope - about 800 billion cubic meters of gas and 250 million tons of oil and condensate.”
