Verkhovna Rada deputy and former press secretary of the current president Irina Friz criticized the statements of Austrian presidential candidate Norbert Hofer about the need to recognize the results of the referendum in Crimea.

“On the eve of the presidential elections in Austria, one of the highest-rated candidates, far-right politician Norbert Hofer, again spoke out on the topic of Crimea. In his opinion, the illegal “referendum”, which took place at gunpoint of the Russian military, needs to be recognized, and the issue should be considered “in its historical context,” says Freese.
She fears that if Austria recognizes the referendum in Crimea, other states will follow suit.
“It is only necessary to recognize an illegal referendum in a hybrid war at the global level once, and the avalanche of similar actions in all corners of the world will no longer be stopped... The Kremlin can consider “in a historical context” many issues in its favor. Therefore, such signals should be given a clear description and appropriate assessment,” calls on Poroshenko’s ally.
