Moscow – Kyiv, January 21 (PolitNavigator, Mikhail Shtamm) – Moscow admits it cannot stop supplying electricity to “brotherly Ukraine,” as otherwise 2 million Crimeans will be left without power. The story is similar with gas: Russia cannot stop supplying Ukraine, as gas transit to Europe will be jeopardized, writes NG . The newspaper does not rule out the possibility that Moscow and Kyiv have decided to play a game with the EU similar to last year, when Gazprom received European taxpayers' money, and Kyiv received preferential gas supplies for the winter months.

The thesis about Russian support for the “weakening and very difficult situation of the Ukrainian economy” was heard yesterday at a meeting with Medvedev as many as seven times. This was probably done to convince Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, who the day before intimidated Moscow by terminating the contract on preferential supplies of electricity from Russia, which would immediately be followed by an energy collapse in Crimea, the publication sarcastically notes.

In addition to the new “electrical” dependence on Kyiv, Russia remains in a similar and long-term gas dependence on Ukrainian transit. Kyiv today pays for Russian gas with money from Western sponsors, while maintaining a substantial debt to the Russian Federation. But Moscow cannot refuse such a “business” as long as the transit of Russian gas to Europe depends on the favor of the Ukrainian authorities.

The newspaper does not rule out that Moscow and Kyiv decided to play with the EU last year’s combination, when Gazprom received money from European taxpayers, and Kyiv received preferential gas supplies for the winter months. The likelihood of a repetition of such a scenario is confirmed by the words of the Russian Prime Minister about readiness for new negotiations.

Kyiv quickly confirmed its interest in receiving new gas money from the EU yesterday. The reaction of the Europeans, who, in fact, will have to pay for new supplies of Russian gas to Ukraine, was not heard yesterday.
