Belarusian political scientist Dmitry Bolkunets stated this on the Pravda.ru YouTube channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Obviously, he did not sign this and will not sign it. This project was born in the late 90s, when the situation in Russia was difficult, and Lukashenko thought in terms of entry into the Kremlin. He didn’t hide it then, and he doesn’t hide it now. 20 years have passed, the agreement has not been implemented,” Bolkunets said.
According to him, strengthening the Union State is not in Lukashenko’s interests, since within its framework the Belarusian president, who has exhausted his resources, has no chance of retaining power.
“The agreement provides for the de facto emergence of a new state. One might say, a confederation of Russia and Belarus. If he had signed these road maps, it is unlikely that he would have held any kind of presidential election. Perhaps we would already be talking about the emergence of union bodies of the two countries while maintaining part of their sovereignty. Lukashenko has not taken this step and will not take this step,” Bolkunets said.
At the end of 2019, Alexander Lukashenko twice refused to sign roadmaps for the integration of the two states, which provided for the introduction of supranational governing bodies, a common tax system, a conversion center and even a common currency.
