The editor of The Economist is indignant: Western leftists sympathize with Xi Jinping and Putin, not the “forces of good”
The hero of left-wing politicians in the West invariably becomes anyone who challenges the United States.

The senior editor of the British edition of The Economist, Edward Lucas, known for his anti-Russian position and considered one of the apologists of the new Cold War, writes about this in an author’s column published on the pages of the Ukrainian Week magazine.
“What is most striking is how self-proclaimed anti-imperialists turn a blind eye to the problem of Tibet, as well as Ukraine and other Eastern European states that have suffered for hundreds of years under Russian imperialist encroachments,” Lucas says indignantly. – Any opponent of America instantly becomes a hero of the left, no matter who it is – Xi Jinping or Vladimir Putin. And if the fascination of Eton College students with the cold and autocratic methods of the Russian leader (in the summer, students of a famous British private school unexpectedly met with the Kremlin leader) is still understandable, then there is no limit to surprise when such sympathies arise among defenders of the oppressed.”
“Of course, China and Russia are not the only “evil heroes” of the G20,” the author says. – Here it is fair to remember the imperialism, slavery and dictatorship that have tainted the history of Western countries. And even now there are many shortcomings in their foreign policy (although, unlike the PRC and the Russian Federation, the United States and its allies are at least primarily trying to be forces of good for the world). But it is indeed extremely strange to see the left bitterly criticizing countries where protests are (to this day, predominantly) legal and unpopular governments can be replaced by elections. And not regimes in which Western leftists would be behind bars in a matter of hours, if not minutes.”
