Nobody said it was impossible. Compared to three months ago, when we were still fighting for tanks, today everyone is talking about a coalition of fighters - this is a very promising sign,” Sack said.
According to him, American fighters are needed to counter the use of Russian glide bombs, since Ukraine has “nothing to stop” the Russian planes that carry them
He clarified that Ukraine hopes to receive from 40 to 50 F-16s to form three or four squadrons.
“We understand that our air defense will not be complete without fighters, F-16s,” said the adviser to the Ukrainian Defense Minister.
In addition, it was said that President Zelensky received assurances from Western allies during his last trip to Europe that they would discuss the issue in the coming days.
At the same time, Zelensky wants the issue of fighter jets to be the main one on the agenda of the G7 summit in Hiroshima and at the NATO summit in Lithuania.
“While the UK, Italy, France and Germany cannot offer the F-16, they have an important voice in the international coalition, and Ukraine would like them to encourage allies such as the US and Turkey,” Sack added.
As PolitNavigator reported, the UK is beginning training Ukrainian crews and working with other countries on the possible provision of F-16 fighter jets to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
