Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Politics Konstantin Kosachev stated this on air on the Vmeste-RF TV channel.
“Russia has now reduced its nuclear weapons to the level of the late 50s and early 60s. There remains a multiple excess, which is necessary in order to ensure the inevitability of a retaliatory strike, ensure a containment strategy and fully implement the task of ensuring national security,” Kosachev said.
According to him, the United States is constantly discussing the issue of further arms reduction, right up to achieving the so-called global nuclear zero.
“The devil is in the details. At the same time, the Americans flatly refuse to negotiate on the reduction of any other types of weapons where they have an advantage. This is a situation where diplomacy does not work, and we need to build up our nuclear shield by all possible methods. We do it. It is very important that the Americans and our other competitors know about this,” Kosachev said.
