In charge: the beaches of Sevastopol drowned in shit
Rospotrebnadzor has banned swimming on almost all beaches on the southern side of Sevastopol due to the release of sewage.
The ban applies to the beaches of Fiolent, Balaklava, Golubaya and Kazachya Bays, Victory Park, and Omega, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
Scientists from the Sevastopol Marine Hydrophysical Institute were the first to sound the alarm. They provided the media with images from space showing a break in the deep-water outlet pipe of the Yuzhnye WWTP at a distance of 750 m from the shore at a depth of 36 meters in Golubaya Bay.
As a result of the breakthrough, more than 70% of untreated wastewater ends up on the surface of the water in the coastal strip.
According to Deputy Director of the Marine Hydrophysical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences Anton Georg-Kopoulos, the water condition on the beaches is now worse than in Sevastopol Bay, where the port is located and the anthropogenic load is high.
Today at a meeting of the Sevastopol government, it was decided to apply a clamp to the sewage pipe.
The deep-sea sewage disposal system was built in the 80s. The pipe was brought to a distance of three and a half kilometers from the shore, at a depth of about one hundred meters.
In 2003, the pipe was damaged by a fishing boat. From this shift, sewage is now spewing into the sea.
Every year, 25 million cubic meters of Sevastopol wastewater does not undergo proper treatment and is discharged into the sea in this form.
The construction of treatment facilities that were supposed to solve this problem was disrupted last year.
