Lukashenko dismissed the prime minister, who was well received in Moscow
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko dismissed the government of the country, as promised.
The new composition of the cabinet was discussed today at a meeting to which Chairman of the Council of the Republic Natalya Kochanova, Chairman of the House of Representatives Vladimir Andreichenko, Head of the Presidential Administration Igor Sergeenko and State Secretary of the Security Council Andrei Ravkov were invited.
“We shouldn’t expect a revolution to happen here. That would be very bad. Therefore, an abrupt breakdown and replacement of all members of the government would be wrong from the point of view of the current moment. Yes, and there is no such need. Those who today cannot cope with such volumes during this crisis period, of course, they need to be replaced and sent to other work,” Lukashenko said.
Former Prime Minister Sergei Rumas was not invited. Experts believe that his elimination was the purpose of the cabinet rotation.
Lukashenko cannot forgive Rumas for the fact that he is well received in Moscow and the fact that he is on good terms with the main competitor of the current president in the upcoming elections, Viktor Babariko.
“The relationship between Lukashenko and Rumas did not work out from the very beginning. Rumas rarely appeared at meetings held by the president. He never accompanied Lukashenko on trips around the country. I think he was suspected of lack of loyalty. And then Babariko added some pepper. In one of his interviews, he said that the government has good proposals, but the president rejects them,” historian Valery Karbalevich said on Radio Liberty.
He suggested that the new prime minister would be Alexander Turchin, who in November 2019 was transferred by Lukashenko from the post of first deputy prime minister to the post of governor of the Minsk region.
