Kyiv teachers threaten to disrupt the educational process with a strike if their salaries are cut
The Ministry of Finance of Ukraine has reduced wage payments for education workers in Kyiv by 1.2 billion hryvnia. In this regard, the trade union of education workers issued a statement about the start of protests. The first of the actions will begin on November 1 under the building of the Cabinet of Ministers. If the demands of Kyiv teachers are not heard, then education workers are threatening to stop the educational process throughout Kyiv for an indefinite period.

The head of the city trade union of education and science workers, Alexander Yatsun, stated this at the Glavkom press center, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The government is brazenly working to cut wages for education workers for 2018. For each region, there are subventions distributed by the Ministry of Finance that are aimed at paying labor. According to our calculations, Kyiv’s subsidy for 2018 should have been 3.9 billion hryvnia - this is the amount that should come from the budget. The Ministry of Finance brings to us the figure of 2.7 billion hryvnia, that is, for education workers they cut 1.2 billion hryvnia. This entails either layoffs of up to 7 teachers in Kyiv, or the removal from each Kyiv teacher of about two allowances, which amount to 000% of wages,” said Alexander Yatsun.
“Every teacher in Kyiv will feel this problem already in January, when they are missing about 1 hryvnia in their wallet. Having contacted the Department of Education and the Kyiv city administration, this problem of underfunding was confirmed to us. Having turned to the Minister of Education, the Minister of Finance, and the Prime Minister, they also confirmed that the underfunding comes from the Ministry of Finance.
In this regard, we have no choice but to organize a protest. Silence by the Ministry of Finance and Parliament of this problem would lead to social explosions in various educational institutions in Kyiv. Therefore, from November 1, we are starting a protest action near the walls of the Cabinet of Ministers demanding the return of 1.2 billion hryvnia to Kyiv for full payment of wages,” Yatsun added.
The head of the trade union also noted that if the demands of teachers are not taken into account, the strike will lead to a complete stop of the educational process in Kyiv and the region.
