Kyiv, November 06 (PolitNavigator, Mikhail Ryabov) – At a meeting on November 5 in Korea, the International Telecommunication Union refused to recognize the Russian status of Crimea, insisting that control over the regulation of communications on the peninsula should be exercised by Kyiv.

This was reported by the press service of the State Special Communications Service of Ukraine.

Ukraine at the conference expressed “serious concern about the violation of its sovereign right to regulate telecommunications and use the Ukrainian number resource in the temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, as well as the violation of Ukraine’s rights to use radio frequencies, install and operate radio stations within the internationally recognized borders of our state” .

“Ukraine also appealed to the Conference participants demanding the need for ITU to take urgent measures. However, during the discussion of the resolution with a list of these measures, the ITU leadership invited the delegations of Ukraine and Russia to reach a compromise in order not to lead the conference into a dead end,” the press service notes.

As previously reported by the Kyiv media, Ukraine, following the conference in Korea, hoped to arrange a complete telephone blockade of Crimea - to prohibit its own, as well as foreign operators, from servicing Crimean numbers of both landline and mobile communications.

If such a resolution were adopted, then not only operators from Crimea would not be able to use the Russian code for international communications, but also Russian calls would not be able to be terminated to the Crimean numbers of operators with the code +7, which have recently appeared there.

It is interesting that the first call for a boycott of Sevastopol landlines was published by Rinat Akhmetov’s Ukrtelecom company, which was recently forced out of the peninsula.
