“It is impossible to completely eradicate hostile attitudes towards one or another people. There are no nations without enemies; they will always be found. Firstly, what is betrayal? And in general, can any people be traitors? If some part of the people spoke out at some historical moment against this or that regime, then the problem is with the regime, not with the people.
Some who say that the Crimean Tatars collaborated with the Germans. And who denies this? Who denies that there were other nationalities collaborating with the Germans? And in general, why were you (supporters of Soviet power) better than the Nazis? Why is it such a big sin to collaborate with the Nazis and not the swamis? If we put on the scales the crimes that the Bolsheviks and Nazis committed against the Crimean Tatar people, I don’t know who will outweigh. If anything, the Bolsheviks killed more people than the Nazis.
Indeed, in the first years of the Second World War, when the Germans came to the territory of the Crimean Peninsula, people had the illusion that a new government had come and that this bandit Bolshevik regime was over. But it turned out that they are not much different from each other. This became especially clear when the mass extermination of Gypsies, Karaites, and Jews began. Therefore, it is very difficult to say unambiguously where is white and where is black.
In Crimean historiography, attitudes towards the Second World War changed from one extreme to another. When deporting the Crimean Tatars, they used the argument that they all collaborated with the Germans. But this is absurd, because as soon as the war began, everyone was mobilized into the Soviet army, regardless of whether you liked the Soviet government or not. There are women, children, and disabled people left, and it is inappropriate to talk about any serious cooperation with the Nazis.
The other extreme is when our compatriots say that we, without exception, collaborated with the Soviet authorities, but we were deported. The truth was somewhere in the middle. There were those who collaborated with the Germans and those who did not cooperate with them.
Now the Crimean Tatars are also called traitors - they should have been with the Russians, but we refused to accept this occupation,” says Mustafa Dzhemilev.
