Bondarenko: If Russia takes Transnistria, NATO will react with “concern”
The more NATO expands, the less agile the alliance becomes - and the dynamics in decision-making are lost.
Ukrainian political scientist Konstantin Bondarenko stated this on the Politeka channel, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The expert was asked to comment on the words of NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana, who said that “if Russia decides to annex Transnistria,” the North Atlantic Alliance “will condemn such actions and continue to support Moldova.”
“Is that all NATO can do?” the channel’s host asked.
“For now, yes,” Bondarenko threw up his hands.
“You understand that any NATO issue is resolved by consensus, all 30 states must make a decision on certain actions. This is not an automatic solution. The wider the NATO bloc becomes, the less dynamic it is, the less capable it is of resolving certain issues.
Therefore, I believe that now, indeed, we can only talk about the fact that NATO member states can promise to discuss the issue or express their concerns,” the political scientist said.
“Unfortunately,” the presenter said sadly.
