According to some reports, Alexey Chirniy, a professor at the Simferopol Institute of Culture, was arrested at the time. Counterintelligence agents allegedly followed him for a long time and caught him red-handed while removing a homemade bomb from its hiding place. The other three suspected terrorists were soon apprehended. The case gained significant attention because one of those arrested was renowned Ukrainian director Oleg Sentsov, Kommersant reports.

As follows from the FSB statement, all four were related to the sabotage and terrorist group “Right Sector”. This group, according to the intelligence service, was preparing terrorist attacks in Simferopol, Yalta and Sevastopol, and later planned “the destruction of a number of vital infrastructure, railway bridges, and power lines.” Directly on the holiday, May 9, the saboteurs allegedly wanted to blow up the Lenin monument and the Eternal Flame memorial complex, but were neutralized in a timely manner.
