“Nothing stops Ukrainians” from saving for old age and putting money aside so that they don’t have to wait for payments from the state when they retire.

This was stated by 34-year-old Minister of Social Policy Yulia Sokolovskaya in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.

“I will say this: today nothing prevents us from saving for our old age, but, unfortunately, for some reason we don’t do this. It's actually human nature. Therefore, encouraging people to save is one way out. But it would be good if people understood and thought about old age in advance,” Sokolovskaya said.

Note that the average salary in Ukraine in the summer of 2019 was less than $400.

The official’s words were criticized in her blog by the former Minister of Justice during the time of President Viktor Yanukovych, Elena Lukash:

"How lovely. And there really is nothing stopping you from accumulating. Most people simply don't have anything. So it doesn't interfere. By the way, Minister Sokolovskaya should consult on pension issues with the adviser to her prime minister, a certain ex-deputy of the Poroshenko Bloc Alexey Mushak. He generally argued that pensions should be abolished,” Lukash noted.

Let us recall that in 2017, Mushak, as a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada, proposed abolishing pensions in order to eliminate the deficit of the Pension Fund. In his opinion, this would give a start to the country's economy.

During the presidency of Petro Poroshenko, Sokolovskaya worked as an adviser to the Ministry of Finance, and was also the head of one of the areas of the American USAID grant program.
