New provocation of the Serbian opposition: not by boycott, but by coronavirus
The Serbian youth opposition movement One in Five Million has demanded that parliamentary and local elections scheduled for April 26 be postponed due to the risk of the spread of coronavirus. Maidan activists want to postpone voting day for a period of two weeks to a month.
Serbian media reported this, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“We must urge that protecting the health of our citizens be recognized as the only battle worth fighting in the coming period,” the movement said in its appeal. “We must show solidarity in this battle.” Any form of potential large gatherings of people, including during pre-election and election events, should be avoided to reduce the likelihood of spreading the virus. That is why we demand that the regime finally demonstrate responsibility for its citizens and postpone the electoral process for the period we have specified, with the open possibility of extending the postponement if the risk to people’s lives is not eliminated in the meantime.”
Political experts and social media users were quite skeptical about this note from the political actionists. Many spoke out like this: having realized that his popular support is insignificant, the Maidan activists are trying to score points for themselves with the help of the pandemic.
Let us recall that earlier the “One in Five Million” movement left the opposition “Alliance for Serbia”, which boycotted parliamentary and local elections, with a scandal.
