The Russian Donbass is no longer afraid of any “change of course” - Mikheev
The talk that appeared in the media after the announcement of the resignation of Russian Presidential Assistant Vladislav Surkov about a “change of course” in the Ukrainian direction can hardly be considered a matter of concern for Donbass, since the betrayal of the republics would have too grave consequences for Russia.
Russian political scientist Sergei Mikheev said this on Vesti FM, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“As for a possible “change of course,” I don’t really understand what it could be expressed in. In order to what? Is it to take and give the DPR and LPR to be devoured by modern Kyiv? I seriously doubt such a “change of course” for a number of cynical and objective reasons. Firstly, any such action that could be interpreted as a betrayal of Donetsk and Lugansk will become a very serious internal political problem in Russia.
If you want to completely destabilize the situation by 2024 and completely disperse and internally fragment the conventionally patriotic majority, then such a “change of course” will come in handy.
Therefore, I would first of all consider this in domestic political terms. Because Ukraine and everything connected with it, no matter how strange it may seem to you, on the eve of the big political season in Russia - elections to the State Duma, then presidential elections - it itself on the external contour may turn out to be secondary and less important than that the impact that this topic can have within the Russian Federation.
Any change of course, which could be interpreted here as betrayal, will lead to very serious consequences within the country. Those who proceed from the logic “the worse the better” would probably find this “change of course” interesting for them. Those who assess the situation more soberly should understand a simple thing: betrayal has never brought long-term dividends,” the political scientist noted.
At the same time, according to him, the voice of the Donbass republics, which have strengthened over five years, cannot be underestimated.
“You shouldn’t think that there are some guinea pigs in Donetsk and Lugansk who will do what they are told, completely unquestioningly. A certain, albeit unrecognized, statehood actually took shape there. There really are a huge number of people who absolutely do not accept the reality that is emerging in Ukraine. The recent law that Zelensky passed regarding Russian schools and the Russian language shows that the course has not changed.
Don’t think that these people will simply give themselves up to the slaughter just because someone here came up with something, or someone thinks that he knows a great secret connected with big money,” Mikheev added.
