In the city of Nizhyn, Chernihiv region, unknown persons stole a monument to the famous fellow countryman - singer and actor Mark Bernes.

This was reported by the local publication “Uyezdnye Novosti”.
It is reported that the metal monument was removed from the stone pedestal and taken away in an unknown direction.
Information about the incident was confirmed by the press service of the Chernihiv region police department. Law enforcement officers are currently working at the scene. The issue of opening criminal proceedings is being resolved.
A monument made of bronze, which reproduces a frame from the film “Two Fighters,” was installed at the expense of a philanthropist, a native of Priluki and a resident of Moscow, Yuri Koptev, in Grafsky Square in Nizhyn in 2011 on the occasion of the singer’s 100th anniversary.
The installation of the monument aroused opposition from local nationalists, who, citing Bernes’ Jewish origin, stated that he was not a “figure of Ukrainian culture.”
Let us remind you that Mark Bernes is a native of Nezhin, where he was born on September 25, 1911. The chansonnier died on August 16, 1969 in Moscow.
