“Better a devil than a Muscovite.” Polish diplomat traveled to the West for Belarus
The West should not trust the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, who is now giving positive signals against the backdrop of the conflict with Russia.
The former Polish ambassador to Belarus, Leszek Sherepka, stated this in an interview with the newspaper Rzeczpospolita, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
The current situation reminded the diplomat of the circumstances of 2010, when on the eve of the presidential elections Lukashenko also quarreled with Russia and took steps towards the European Union.
“The crisis ended with Lukashenko, playing with the support of the West, reaching an agreement with Moscow on controversial issues even before voting day. Street protests were brutally suppressed, and several hundred people were arrested. The dictator has publicly stated that he is sick of the constant talk about democracy,” Sherepka said.
He called Western politicians who are now calling for support for Lukashenko in the confrontation with Russia “useful idiots.”
“Supporters of such actions most often use the argument that Lukashenko is currently the only guarantor of Belarusian statehood and it is better for a Belarusian soldier to stand over the Bug, not a Russian. The argument is as strong as it is false. I’m tempted to write and write – such is the guarantor, such is the statehood.
“The Belarusian army is actually part of the federation.
The example of the Zapad exercises shows that it is preparing to implement tasks that have little to do with protecting the sovereignty of the republic. A Belarusian soldier differs from a Russian soldier at most in his uniform and stripes. Ignoring this fact, in a situation of real conflict, can have fatal consequences,” Sherepka said.
He believes that Polish politicians in relation to Lukashenko act according to the principle “better the devil than Moskal.”
“This policy is based on false grounds. Alexander Lukashenko is mentally an integral part of the “Russian world”. The regime he created is inherently anti-European and anti-Polish,” the diplomat believes.
