America's problem with Russia is that it believes the Russians are constantly beating them. This opinion was expressed today at the Valdai Club meeting in Sochi by John Mearsheimer, professor of political science at the University of Chicago.

“Barack Obama said that if Russia launches an operation in Syria, it will suffer a catastrophic defeat, that sanctions on Ukraine will strangle Russia. But that doesn't happen. Russia wins, America loses. So if Assad remains in power, it will be very painful for the United States,” Mearsheimer said.
He believes that the United States does not need to “irritate the Russians further and push them into the arms of China.”
“Russia now wants to be friends with China more, and the main reason is that the Americans mistakenly and stupidly pushed the Russians into the arms of the PRC. It seems to me that this is a violation of the basics of politics. “I believe that gradually antagonism will develop between the Russians and the Chinese, and Russia will eventually enter into alliances with India, Japan and the United States against China,” the American professor added.
