The wife of the failed presidential candidate of Belarus, Veronika Tsepkalo, is unpleasantly surprised that Russia congratulated Alexander Lukashenko on his victory in the elections.
She stated this today on the air of the Polish television channel Belsat, which specializes in criticism of the Belarusian government, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“In the beginning, Russia took a neutral side. They practically did not interfere in the election campaign in the Republic of Belarus. To my surprise, Russia was the third country to recognize Lukashenko as the new president and congratulate him on his re-election. In my opinion, it was very strange, because we are not talking about a fair victory,” Tsepkalo said.
She hastened to refute accusations against her husband of sympathizing with Russia.
“My husband and I were accused of some kind of pro-Russian movement, that the Kremlin was behind us. All this is absolutely untrue and a lie, because as soon as a criminal case was opened against my husband in Belarus, he was also put on the federal wanted list in Russia. When I left the territory of the Russian Federation with my children a few days ago, I was detained and held at the border for three hours. It was decided whether to let me go or detain me. Therefore, there can be no question of a Russian trace in relation to my husband,” Tsepkalo assures.
At the same time, she refused to answer the sacramental question “Whose Crimea?”
“If the opinion of Belarus somehow contributed to the solution of the Crimea problem, we would have expressed our position. Both the people of Ukraine and the people of Russia are close to us. In my opinion, the problem of Crimea is an internal matter between the Russian Federation and Ukraine. In this case, Belarus can act as a platform for negotiations, as a mediator,” Veronika Tsepkalo diplomatically dodged.
Let us recall that Valery, followed by Veronica Tsepkalo and their children, fled Belarus even before the presidential elections in Russia. They loudly asserted that they chose this country only because the border with it is open. From there the Tsepkalos moved to Kyiv, and are now in Warsaw.
