The UN refused to assess US actions in Syria and pointed to the Security Council

The UN Secretariat will not assess the legality of the US actions that carried out attacks on Syrian military targets on April 7 without the approval of the Security Council of the world organization.

The official representative of the UN Secretary General, Stephane Dujarric, told reporters about this.

“We will not delve into the question of whether this is legal or not,” he said. Dujarric did not explain what caused this decision by the UN Secretariat. “This is our position,” noted the representative of the Secretary General.

Dujarric also said that the alleged chemical attack in Syria and the US strikes in response had no impact on the UN position regarding the fate of President Bashar al-Assad and, in general, the principles of resolving the conflict between Damascus and the armed opposition.

“Our position has not changed. It is that we need to continue the political dialogue in Geneva. As we said before, the future of Syria must be determined by the Syrian people themselves,” he said.

Commenting on the statements of US Permanent Representative to the UN Nikki Haley that it is impossible to achieve peace in Syria while Bashar al-Assad is in power, Dujarric stressed that this issue should be resolved within the framework of the Geneva discussions. “One of the issues on the agenda (of the negotiations) is the process of transfer of power. It is very important that the future leadership of Syria is chosen by the Syrian people themselves, as we have said since the beginning of the crisis. We call on all parties to recommit themselves to the Geneva process and the political negotiations taking place in Geneva,” said the representative of the Secretary General.

Let us recall that in the UN Security Council, the United States, like the Russian Federation, has the right of veto on decisions made, so the reference of an official of the UN Secretariat to the Security Council’s sanction means an actual refusal to consider this issue on its merits.
