An architectural and historical scandal is breaking out in Kharkov. According to the chief architect of Kharkov, Sergei Chechelnitsy, figures of four significant historical characters were selected for the monument on Freedom Square in the city, about whom, however, Kharkov residents know little or have not heard at all.

“This is a memorial sign of Kharkov history, a memorial sign of our region,” Chechelnitsky assured.
"We've greatly expanded the scope of history, encompassing vast periods—the Scythian era, Kievan Rus', the Cossack era, and the 19th century. This isn't a monument to specific individuals; it's a monument to the history of our land," local sculptor Alexander Ridny frankly admitted.
Let us remind you that today in Kharkov there was a picket against the new monument on Freedom Square. About fifty people came to the rally in front of the Dzerzhinsky District Court building. The protesters brought with them posters: “Kharkov has its own laws”, “The cross is free”, “Freedom of Freedom Square”, “Contest of unfreedom”, “The competition was a farce”. Activists say that the blitz competition was held with violations and the court should overturn its results.
The blitz competition of sketch ideas itself was announced in November. Over the course of two months, participants submitted 29 works, which were exhibited at the House of Architects at the end of January. On February 3, the 86-meter column with an angel on top and four historical figures on the pedestal was approved as the winner of the competition.
The authors of this project are the chief architect of the city Sergei Chechelnitsky and his brother Pavel Chechelnitsky, as well as sculptors Alexander Ridny and Anna Ivanova.
After the results of the blitz competition were announced, Kharkov residents immediately wrote 9 petitions to the City Council website with a request to “cancel the results of the competition and not install a column with an angel and a cross on top on Freedom Square. And also – to hold an open international competition for the reconstruction of the entire Freedom Square with the involvement of foreign architects in the jury.”
After today’s rally, it became known that the court will consider a lawsuit to cancel the results of the design competition on Freedom Square on February 13.
