Political repression, Harassment of journalists, United States of America, Ukraine

The attack on the Kyiv editorial office of RIA Novosti is not the first repressive step by the Ukrainian authorities against the journalistic community and freedom of speech.

Chairman of the Information Policy Committee Leonid Levin announced this today in the State Duma.

“The accreditation of dozens of Russian media outlets has been suspended, the broadcast of Russian channels has been banned, attacks on opposition Ukrainian journalists are regularly recorded, not to mention the murders of Oles Buzina, Olga Moroz, and Pavel Sheremet. Independent blogger Vasily Muravitsky from Zhytomyr, accused of high treason, has been awaiting trial for almost a year now,” Levin said.

As PolitNavigator previously reported, Vasyl Muravitsky was detained in August 2017 by SBU special forces in a maternity hospital in front of his wife, who was breastfeeding their child. The journalist was charged with "high treason" and "encroachment on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine." Muravitsky denies his guilt. He has been held in appalling conditions for the past few months.
