Ukrainian deputies want to punish residents of Severodonetsk for sympathizing with Russia and rename the city
On October 26, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine registered a bill to rename Severodonetsk, Lugansk region. The renaming is due to the fact that the current name allegedly does not correspond to the rules of the Ukrainian language, but is a tracing-paper from the Russian language.

Moreover, let us recall that attempts to find the “ancient” name of this industrial center in the Luhansk region were unsuccessful for the reason that the city was founded under Soviet rule in 1934 and until 1950 was called Lishimstroy - after the name of the city-forming enterprise at that time.
Ukrainian deputies propose to rename Severodonetsk to Siverskodonetsk. At the same time, Kyiv “linguists” argue that if the renaming occurs due to the need to bring the name into compliance with the rules of the Ukrainian language, then public hearings on this issue are not needed.
The explanatory note to the bill says that several professors and linguists insist on using the name Siverskodonetsk.
Ukrainian deputies also emphasize that the renaming must be done in defiance of the pro-Russian sentiments of local residents.
“It is also worth considering that as a result of Russian armed aggression, in the fall of 2014, the city of Severodonetsk became the de facto regional center of the Lugansk region and is, for now, a bastion of the Ukrainian Luhansk region, and cannot bear a Russified name,” says the explanatory note to the bill.
