Former head of the SBU Igor Smeshko stated this in an interview with the Kyiv newspaper Den.
“Russia did not send its troops into the Donetsk and Lugansk regions until this time because it did not expect such resistance from the Ukrainian people at the grassroots level. A “royal court” has long been formed around President Putin, which tells him only what he wants to hear—which is actually a lie. Nobody told him that the Ukrainian people are not Russians. I think, finally, the whole world is beginning to understand that the word “Russian” and “Russian” are also two different meanings and concepts... Therefore, the active phase of aggression on the part of Russia, such as the deployment of troops in Crimea, in the Donbass, has not yet taken place.” , noted the publication’s interlocutor.
However, in his opinion, the threat of a Russian military invasion has still been removed:
“Putin has crossed the Rubicon - thanks to total propaganda, his support in Russia exceeds 80%. It was not in vain that he praised Goebbels even in front of the Jewish rabbis, because, apparently, he is really fascinated by this personality and applies his methods in information processing, first of all, of his own people,” says Smeshko.
Objectively, he admitted, in Russia at the moment “there are 100-150 thousand trained army for offensive actions”
“But they will not be able to win the war in Ukraine. Ukraine is the second territory in Europe, and the Ukrainian people have already historically proven that freedom is the main thing for them, they are not a people with a slave psychology and obedience. But on the other hand, a huge problem for Putin now is how to get out of this situation without losing the artificially inflated support of the population in Russia. And we need to gradually deploy the army, reduce the chances for these 100 thousand Russian military to go at least 10-20 km deep into our country. There is no other option for us,” warns the former head of the SBU.
