“By raising the topic of creating a “modern analogue of the anti-Hitler coalition” against Islamic radicals in Syria, the GDP has radically disrupted the agenda of world diplomacy,” writes political commentator for the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper Mikhail Rostovsky.

“Previously, at the UN General Assembly, Vladimir Putin was planned to be demonstratively flogged, covered with shame and sent home with a wolf ticket,” the author notes. – But such plans were made in relation to the “former Putin” - “Putin, a malicious violator of international law.” Naturally, they do not apply to Putin, who offers the West a chance to get him off the Syrian hook. GDP left New York, if not in the rank of triumph, then in the rank of a full-fledged political partner of America - a partner who, perhaps, cannot be tolerated, but whom they still cannot do without.”

According to the journalist, the Ukrainian crisis has driven Russia into a strategic impasse, and now the country has “trump cards for a big, serious, multi-stage and multi-step political game,” but he adds, “what looms ahead will not necessarily come true.”

“What Russia doesn’t have after Putin’s visit to New York is any reason to be giddy with success,” the author warns. – GDP’s voyage to the UN did not change the main thing: the Ukrainian crisis is still dragging Russia down. Yes, our Syrian initiatives give Moscow additional leverage on Kyiv’s Western allies and sponsors. But these same initiatives do not add any tools for direct influence on Kyiv. Ukraine doesn’t care what happens in Syria. Ukraine is fixated on its conflict with Russia and is not at all eager to make peace with us quickly. Politicians in Kyiv are confident that time is on their side, so they are working hard to freeze the conflict in its current form. In this situation, creative, pragmatic and completely devoid of emotions steps are required from Russia.”

The essence of Kyiv’s game, the publication says, is not to implement the Minsk agreements, but at the same time loudly blame Moscow for their failure to comply and thereby bring us under more and more Western sanctions.

“Russia must break this game of the Ukrainian authorities. Now is the most favorable moment for this,” Rostovtsev sums up, stipulating that “in Syria, Russia should not repeat either Soviet or American mistakes.”
