“All these projects will give Russia the opportunity to completely abandon gas exports to Europe through the Ukrainian gas transportation system,” the publication notes. “This will allow our country to save a lot of money.” As the head of Gazprom Alexey Miller said, transporting fuel to Europe through Ukraine is 20% more expensive than through the same Nord Stream 2. Over the next 25 years, transit through Ukraine will cost Gazprom $25-42 billion in extra costs. Nord Stream 2 will cost half as much. By the way, the construction of this pipe benefits the West, since European companies are involved in this project. According to Miller, savings from abandoning Ukrainian pipes will make it possible to pay dividends of $7 billion to Nord Stream shareholders.”

“But in Ukraine, if they stop pumping gas through its pipes, they will turn into ordinary scrap metal. Kyiv’s revenues from transporting Russian fuel to Europe make up a significant share of budget revenues, which are already in short supply,” MK sums up.
