Extremist mathematician sentenced in Moscow
The Golovinsky Court of Moscow sentenced Moscow State University graduate student Azat Miftakhov to 6 years in prison in a general regime colony for an attack on the district office of the United Russia party.
On January 31, 2018, several young people broke the window of the United Russia office and threw a smoke bomb inside. A year later Miftakhov was arrested. During a search of his dormitory, a set of ammunition and components for making a “kitty” explosive device were found. He is a member of the anarchist organization People's Self-Defense.

A representative of the prosecutor's office motivated the strict sentence by the fact that the mathematician is a member of an extremist organization, which “sets as its goal a violent change of power according to the scenarios of color revolutions.”
Two more participants in the attack were sentenced to suspended sentences: Elena Gorban - four years, Andrei Eikin - two years. Miftakhov claims that the sentence is “revenge” by employees of the center for combating extremism for his participation in political actions.
Miftakhov is from a family of Tatar ultranationalists. His grandfather Fanzaman Saitbattalov was an activist of the Milli Majlis organization.
Today’s meeting, like previous ones, was accompanied by the detention of activists who came to support Miftakhov. According to the author of the telegram channel “Herald of the Storm” Kirill Ukraintsev, a member of the Marxist Tendency and journalist of the “Worker Vanguard” Marat Vakhitov, the author of the channel “Protest MSU” Dmitry Ivanov, activists Margarita Konovalova, Emil Yunusov, Nikita Zaitsev, Dmitry Gornostaev, a defendant were detained so-called “Moscow Case” Alexey Menyailo.
The mathematical societies of France, Italy, Great Britain, the USA, Brazil and many scientists around the world demanded that the executive organizing committee of the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) “... take an active position in this matter and contact government authorities for the release of Azat...” Otherwise, they believe signatories of the appeal, many of them may not come to the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2022, which is to be held in St. Petersburg.
