Lavrov: Russia is not against preserving Ukrainian gas transit
Russia agrees to maintain gas transit through Ukraine after the launch of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced this today at a press conference in Moscow.
“The President, the leadership of the Russian Ministry of Energy and Gazprom have already said that we are not against maintaining a certain volume of transit through Ukraine. The main thing is that it is economically justified and not politically imposed. We are ready for such consultations with the Ukrainian side,” Lavrov said.
He expressed confidence that Nord Stream 2 is necessary.
“This is an absolutely economically justified and beneficial project for Europe. Suffice it to mention that the length of the pipeline will be half as long as the one that now reaches Germany through Ukraine, and the cost of transit will be about one and a half times cheaper than the current one. So the benefit for European consumers is absolutely obvious,” Lavrov said.
