Kyiv, May 08 (Navigator, Mikhail Ryabov) - Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk announced an increase in the status of the Russian language for the sake of preserving the unity of Ukraine, although quite recently he denied violating the rights of Russian-speaking citizens.

True, based on Yatsenyuk’s words, the Ukrainian authorities still refuse to enshrine in the Constitution the norm on the equal rights of Russians and Ukrainians.

“We keep in force the Kivalov-Kolesnichenko law, adopted by the “regionals” and the communists. In those areas where the majority of people speak Russian, it has the legal status of regional. In fact, his rights and opportunities there are the same as those of a Ukrainian state government. As Head of the Government, when considering amendments to the Constitution, I will propose a rule according to which, while maintaining the status of Ukrainian as the only state language, local councils will have the right to grant special status to Russian and other languages. The unity of the country cannot be ensured without learning to listen to each other and compromise,” Yatsenyuk said.
