The European Union is seriously concerned about the presidential elections in Moldova, which will take place on Sunday. Voters' sympathies were divided between conventionally pro-Western and pro-Russian candidates.

"The main intrigue of the Moldovan presidential elections, which will take place on October 30, is the confrontation between the 'pro-Russian' Igor Dodon and the 'pro-European' Maia Sandu," said Sabin Ocran, editor-in-chief of the Romania Libera publication, during a discussion of the situation on television.

"Igor Dodon's platform is the federalization of Moldova and a path toward Russia as a state capable of resolving the conflict between Moldova and Transnistria. His position envisions two parallel special status projects: for Transnistria and Donbas, and for Ukraine," political analyst Vladimir Socor confirmed in an interview with DC News.

“Brussels is seriously concerned about what is happening in Moldova,” he added, explaining that voter sentiment is polarizing and this seriously threatens stability in the region.

According to the expert, now Moldova is really led by an oligarchy under the leadership of Vlad Plahotniuc. “Plahotniuc received 15% in the last elections, but his share is more than 400 out of 900 city mayors,” the analyst recalled.

According to him, during the election campaign, all of Plahotniuc’s real henchmen dropped out of the race, and now the oligarch is trying to harm both leaders of the ratings.
