Workers let Poroshenko down
Turnout in the presidential elections in the western regions of Ukraine was more than 10% lower than in the 2014 elections.
This was stated at a press conference in Kyiv by Alexander Levtsun, head of sociological programs at the Sofia Center for Social Research, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“In the 2014 presidential elections, turnout in the west and center of Ukraine averaged 67%, while in the southeast (excluding Donbass) it was 51%. In the current elections, voter turnout in the western regions was significantly lower compared to 2014. For example, the Lviv region remained the leader of electoral activity, but if in 2014 78% of voters came to vote in the Lviv region, then in 2019 – 69%.
In Galicia as a whole, electoral activity decreased by more than 10%. In particular, in the Ternopil region it decreased by 11%, in the Ivano-Frankivsk region - by 12%. The reason for the drop in turnout is not a drop in interest in the elections, but a decrease in the size of the population itself, the number of voters in the localities. This is a direct consequence of labor migration. There is a reduction in the actual population in the western regions,” Levtsun emphasized.
It should be noted that the current President Poroshenko received the most votes during the elections held on March 31 in the western regions.
