Kyiv Philosopher: The Russian World Raises Its Head in Ukraine
In Ukraine, in addition to openly pro-Russian forces, a layer of people who want to return the country to its pre-Maidan state is becoming increasingly visible.
Ukrainian public philosopher and teacher at the Kyiv-Mohyla Business School Valeriy Pekar stated this on the Krapivny channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
The presenter asked: “Will the Russian world be able to raise its head, in the context of what is happening in the country now?”
"Obviously. We have between 10 (optimistically speaking) and 30 (pessimistically speaking) percent of people who support the Russian World in one way or another. But that 10 percent is the core electorate, those who say, 'Putin, come on board.' And the larger portion are those who will never agree with you if you call them pro-Russian; they're pro-Ukrainian."
But what kind of Ukraine are they for? Neutral, non-aligned, with small armed forces, which has no clear geopolitical dimension, which is partly pro-Russian, partly pro-European. Approximately the same as it was at the beginning of the 21st century. It is simply impossible to return there, but people want to return to where it is impossible,” Pekar answered.
"It is obvious that such a party in parliament will be an ally of the pro-Russian party. Because on specific issues, such as what to do with the Russian church, what to do with Russian TV channels, what to do with the Russian money that comes here, they will vote in solidarity with the pro-Russian parties. No less than 15 percent, according to a conservative estimate.
“And we see that those channels and those media personalities who position themselves not as pro-Russian, but as pro-Ukrainian, but about this Ukraine – the Ukraine of the past, the Ukraine of the Kuchma era – their narratives are attracting quite a lot of attention ,” the philosopher laments.
