The joint statement by Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron on the need for a ceasefire in Donbas and lifting the blockade of the LPR and DPR cannot please Petro Poroshenko, Russian political scientist Armen Gasparyan told PolitNavigator.

“Poroshenko is in no hurry to implement point No. 1 of the Minsk agreements, which provides for an immediate ceasefire. This automatically means the withdrawal of the most radical nationalist part from the contact line to other regions of Ukraine. This, in turn, means that an uncontrolled crowd is emerging that will be engaged in the overthrow of Mr. Poroshenko. Poroshenko understands this very well, and therefore does not want to do this,” Gasparyan said.
He believes that Merkel and Macron could not help but raise the question of lifting the blockade of Donbass, because it contradicts the Minsk agreements.
“Europe, of course, will put pressure on them on this issue, because the blockade contradicts the Minsk agreements. There is nothing there about the blockade, because the blockade is the first step towards genocide. In Ukraine there are severe problems with the awareness of this. The only question is how radically hard Europe is ready to push it. And what will be the position of the rest of the Ukrainian elite when they are confronted with a fact,” Gasparyan said.
