Police supporter Alexievich believes that Belarusians can only be proud of themselves for Maidan Square
Nobel Prize laureate Svetlana Alexievich believes that for the first time after recent mass protests, Belarusians have a reason to be proud of themselves.
She announced this to journalists today before going to the Investigative Committee for questioning regarding the attempted seizure of power, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“I think each of you is proud of your people today. To be honest, we haven’t had this feeling yet... You see what wonderful developments are happening in the Western media. A brand of Belarus has appeared. Belarusians suddenly became a people that the whole world knew about,” says the writer.
It is known that Belarus became a member of the UN while still a republic within the USSR. Thus, the world recognized the heroic feat of the Belarusian people, who lost every fourth inhabitant during the fascist occupation, but set an example of heroic guerrilla warfare.
However, according to Nobel laureate Alexievich, the Belarusian policemen who collaborated with the fascists were ordinary rural guys who spent the entire war in their villages, and the partisans were brutal murderers and rapists. She stated this to the liberal publication Meduza.
