“EU countries are torn over the issue of new sanctions against Russia. The Americans have increased the pressure, but more and more countries are feeling the effects of these sanctions on their economies. The EU authorities are thus trying to gain time, but the Americans persist and put pressure on EU taxpayers to allocate new military loans for the insolvent Ukraine,” writes German Economic News.
The EU Council of Foreign Ministers will, in accordance with a draft prepared for a meeting on Thursday, propose expanding sanctions against Russia. The formal reason for new sanctions could be the shelling of Mariupol. The meeting of EU foreign ministers was initiated by the Latvian Foreign Minister. “He believes that the Russians are responsible for the shelling of Mariupol, although there is no material evidence of Moscow’s involvement,” the publication reports.
The initial reason for the first wave of sanctions was the crash of flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine. The tragedy in Mariupol will be used in a similar way.
The current EU diplomacy on this issue is characterized by significant uncertainty: apparently, it is playing for time, the publication is sure. The EU, according to German journalists, is deeply divided on the issue of how to act against Russia.
The US is pushing for new sanctions, while the EU is resisting, according to German economic news.
