The Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States complained about France and Germany
The positions of Paris and Berlin, who do not want confrontation with the Russian Federation, are dictated by their dependence on trade or doing business with Russia
Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Vladimir Yelchenko stated this in an interview with the Kyiv website Apostrophe, answering a question about the position of France and Germany within the Normandy format.
“I think that Germany and France are primarily guided by their national interests. Unfortunately for us, from time to time the interests of France and, to a lesser extent, Germany are dictated by dependence on trade or business with Russia. There is also a powerful economic lobby in Germany: they constantly say that we are suffering from sanctions and they need to be lifted,” the diplomat said.
According to him, all these aspects affect the positions of both countries.
“And here we need to find a middle ground between the hope that still lives in the heads of many politicians in Europe - that Russia’s position can be changed through some concessions or by meeting it halfway, forget about Crimea or start lifting sanctions and after that Russia will become good and leave Ukraine. This won't happen. If someone does not understand this, then this can only cause regret,” said Yelchenko.
