If Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko sees that he is losing in the upcoming elections, an attempt will be made to introduce martial law in the country.

Former Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov stated this in an interview with Izvestia, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

Assessing yesterday’s speech by the President of Ukraine in parliament, Azarov emphasized that any words by Poroshenko should now be considered exclusively in the context of the election campaign.

The ex-prime minister is convinced that the president is trying to save his position by banking on the radical and nationalist electorate, to whom he is trying to convey that only he is the most anti-Russian Ukrainian politician.

“At the same time, apparently, his headquarters is also considering backup options. If this part of the electorate still does not support him and the team understands that it is impossible to concentrate these people on Poroshenko, the statement about a forceful solution to the conflict in Donbass takes on a different meaning. Then his statement means the opportunity to unleash a military offensive and, against this background, declare martial law in the country. In such conditions, it is possible to cancel the elections. Now he is clearly preparing the ground for this,” Azarov believes.

He noted that recently military personnel from the United States and British Secretary of State for Defense Gavin Williamson (pictured) visited the demarcation line in Donbass.

“What did they forget there? What security issues for his country did the British representative decide there? Great Britain did not pay attention to Ukraine for 27 years, but now it became interested in what was happening there, at the forefront. All this suggests that different options are being prepared. And the words about a peaceful settlement are only for reassurance. In fact, Poroshenko wants to organize a forceful cleansing of the region when the moment is ripe for this, and he and his people are confident that they will not receive a serious response.
