Kyiv, February 23 (PolitNavigator, Vasyl Ablyazimov) – A new wave of hryvnia devaluation (to 30 hryvnias and above) has dealt a severe blow to Ukraine's banking system. Residents have rushed to withdraw money from card and deposit accounts. Many banks will require refinancing from the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) or face bankruptcy, reports Vesti.

On Friday, February 20, the dollar rose to almost 30 UAH on the interbank market. and is not going to fall. This led to a massive stir. Citizens of Ukraine again flocked to bank branches to withdraw money from card and deposit accounts. A number of small and medium-sized banks announced the need for refinancing at the expense of the NBU.

“Banks may require additional refinancing from the regulator in order to block new outflows of funds,” noted Dmitry Grijuk, Chairman of the Board of Khreshchatyk Bank. Moreover, due to the sharp devaluation, all banks fell into the ranks of violators of all the main economic standards of the NBU: from the capital and loan adequacy standard per borrower to the foreign exchange position standard. All banks do not have enough capital in hryvnia to cover their assets, since part of the loans were presented in foreign currency, and when they were converted into hryvnia, its size increased sharply.

“To solve this problem, we need to understand the National Bank, and most importantly, the shareholders. Bankers have recently come to the owners very often and ask for new cash injections - more and more each time. But, unfortunately, not all shareholders have faith in the future of our banking business. Therefore, it is already clear that not all Ukrainian banks will support,” said Vyacheslav Yutkin, First Deputy Chairman of the Board of Prominvestbank.

Let us remind you that in February the NBU already introduced temporary administration into three large banks, refusing to refinance them. Most likely, the destruction of the Ukrainian banking system will not stop there.
