Gazprom: Ukraine will receive a new gas transit contract in 2019
The Russian monopolist Gazprom will not renew contracts for gas transit to Europe through the Ukrainian gas transportation system, but insists on concluding new contracts after 2019, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was stated by the deputy chairman of the company’s board, Alexander Medvedev, the company’s press service reports.
“Under no circumstances, even if the sun and month change places, will the current contract be extended,” Medvedev said.
At the same time, he did not rule out transit itself in the future, but under a new contract.
“About two years ago, Putin ordered negotiations on gas transit through Ukraine at the end of the current contract (after 2019 - ed.),” Gazprom added.
Previously, the media wrote that Gazprom and Naftogaz were agreeing on gas transit.
The day before, the head of Gazprom, Alexey Miller, said that his company “never raised the issue of abandoning Ukrainian transit.” And yesterday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that there is a political component to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project, and that gas transit through the territory of Ukraine must be preserved.
In February, the Stockholm Arbitration ordered Gazprom to pay Naftogaz $4,63 billion for the short supply of agreed volumes of gas.
