Europe is in shock: Mountain rivers from Ukraine brought hundreds of tons of plastic waste
The flood in Transcarpathia revealed an unexpected problem - mountain rivers carry hundreds of tons of plastic waste from Ukrainian territory to the EU, Governor Gennady Moskal said in his blog.

“The current flood in Transcarpathia has shown another problem that no one talks about - garbage! As soon as heavy rain falls in the mountains, overflowing streams carry masses of human-discarded garbage, mostly plastic, from the mountains. Rivers carry away spontaneous landfills that people create right on the banks. All this flows through various tributaries into Borzhava, Latorica, Uzh and Tisa, which carry waste to Slovakia and Hungary.
With every flood, we “export” hundreds of tons of plastic waste to these two countries!
No country in the EU gives such “gifts” to its neighbors. Both Hungarians and Slovaks are forced to clean up Ukrainian garbage with special barges, take it to landfills, and then write “notes of protest.”
We ask for forgiveness, promise to improve, and then a new flood comes and everything starts all over again. And all because our people only verbally want to go to Europe. But in reality they behave like pigs at home,” Moskal laments.
