Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky should demand that the Georgian authorities release Mikheil Saakashvili, who was arrested in Georgia, as a Ukrainian citizen, but he will not agree to this.
Political scientist Andrey Sichka announced this at a press conference in Kiev, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“It is very important to consider Ukraine’s official attitude towards this event. In any democratic country, the president of the country and the government of the country must fight for each of its citizens. It is impossible to imagine a situation where a US citizen, finding himself in any difficult situation in any part of the world, would find himself without the help of his state. This is impossible.
We are put in a situation where a person who occupies one of the leading government positions and is a citizen of Ukraine is arrested on the territory of another state. Now it would be appropriate for the President of Ukraine to make claims against the Georgian government and with a request to extradite him as a citizen of Ukraine.
But will Zelensky agree to this, will this presidential administration, government, and so on? It seems to me that they will not agree to this. This will lead, if not to confrontation, then to a conflict that will be considered inappropriate by the world community.
It is really inappropriate between Ukraine and Georgia. I think that in this case the Ukrainian authorities will sacrifice such a dubious personality as Mikhail Nikolaevich and will not interfere in this conflict. That is, they won’t pull him out,” the political scientist said.
