The memory of Afghan soldiers was honored in Donetsk
Today, on the day of the 30th anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan, a rally was held in Donetsk at the monument to internationalist soldiers, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Speaking at the rally, the head of the DPR Denis Pushilin noted that despite these 30 years, the memory still resonates with pain for those who did not return.
“That war is in some sense similar to ours; it was then that the Soviet army became an outpost in the fight against international terrorism. Then the West helped the Mujahideen, trained them, and supplied them with weapons. And now the army of the Donetsk People’s Republic is also an outpost in the fight against nationalism, terrible radicalism, intolerance, and again the West is helping our enemy, who wants to destroy everything Russian,” said the head of the republic.
Vladimir Savelov, deputy of the National Assembly of the DPR, chairman of the republican organization Union of Afghan Veterans of the DPR, also addressed those present.
“On this February day in 1989, the last column of Soviet troops left the territory of Afghanistan. Closing the column, the commander of the 40th Army, Lieutenant General Boris Gromov, stated that “there are no more soldiers and officers behind me, the Afghan war is over.” In order to prevent escalation on our southern borders of the USSR, Soviet troops completed the assigned task in full,” Savelov noted.
After the meeting, a flower laying ceremony took place.
