Ukraine will not withdraw its signature to the Agreement on the Formation of the CIS, thanks to which it has the status of a founding country. The Kiev publication “Mirror of the Week” writes about this today.

“Potential risks became a reason for Kyiv to abandon the idea of withdrawing from the 1991 Agreement: according to our information, this document is not mentioned in the decision of the National Security and Defense Council on international treaties within the Commonwealth, from which Kiev plans to withdraw,” the publication writes.

Ukraine's exit from the CIS would make Kyiv's claims to Russia regarding its territorial integrity completely unfounded.

“There is also the issue of Article 5 of the Agreement on the Formation of the CIS: it assumes that its participants recognize each other’s territorial integrity and the inviolability of existing borders. This provision seems important for many in Kyiv, since it records Moscow’s recognition of its obligations to Ukraine regarding borders,” the publication writes.

Thus, the weekly states, Poroshenko’s statement about leaving the CIS was empty pre-election PR. To hide this, the decree does not indicate which agreements within the CIS Ukraine is withdrawing from.

“On the one hand, of course, we should not make the work of the Russians easier and notify them in advance about which agreements Kyiv plans to keep and which ones it plans to leave. On the other hand, the publication of the list of international treaties from which Ukraine plans to withdraw would dispel the myth that our country is leaving the CIS. And the tsunami of criticism raised would again “cover” the image of the head of state,” the publication writes.
